Apartments, brewery approved in Old Town

A three-story apartment building, a new brewery in town, and seven storage units are totally kosher, according to the Fort Collins Planning and Zoning Board.

The Board approved two major construction projects in the Old Town area last week.

A brand new apartment building deemed “The Slab” will offer mostly 2-bedroom units, some 1-bedroom, providing 70 bedrooms total.  The lot at 808 W. Prospect Road spans 1.44 acres, and will also include 87 parking spaces for cars and 77 for bicycles.

The Board’s approval on The Slab project comes after a proposal for student housing on the same lot was shot down in 2008 due to a rough patch in the economy.

About 10 minutes away at the intersection of Lemay and Buckingham, a very different type of project is underway.  Just down the street from New Belgium, a new, 7,219 square foot craft brewery will be moving in.  On the same lot, seven self-storage buildings will go up.  A three-quarters acre of the 6.3 acre lot will remain vacant.

You also don’t need to worry about your favorite mobile eats driving away anytime soon, the Board said.  After a complaint about food trucks staying in the same area too long and creating semi-permanent spots for themselves around Fort Collins, the Board recommended that there be no change in the standing rules for food trucks.
